"How" to be Mindful

The DBT HOW skill tells us how to be mindful.


  1. Like all of the skills, the best thing we can do to learn the skill is to practice noticing when we are judgemental and what our faces do when we are being judgy. Let's be aware of our posture when we are being judgemental.

  2. To practice one-mindfulness means noticing the present moment as we do things. It can be thought of as active mindfulness.

  3. Consider our goals and if what we are doing or thinking of doing aligns with our goals—being effective means paying attention to what matters most and forgetting the rest.
